Mr Martin Wheatley's departure a loss to SFC
********************************************

The Acting Financial Secretary, Professor K C Chan, acknowledged today (December 8) the receipt by the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, of the notice of resignation of Mr Martin Wheatley as Chief Executive Officer of the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC).

Professor Chan said: "We respect Mr Wheatley's decision. During his tenure as CEO, Mr Wheatley has made zealous efforts in fostering Hong Kong's strong regulatory structure, one of the bedrocks of our financial services industry.

"Under his exemplary leadership, the SFC's profile as a leading financial regulator has been significantly enhanced.

"Mr Wheatley's representation of Hong Kong at international forums has also contributed to building a positive and favourable image for the SFC.

"Mr Wheatley has successfully led the SFC in responding to a global call for tightening regulation of investment products and market activities.  Hong Kong's financial regulatory framework has been strengthened following the 2008 international financial crisis.  His departure next June is a loss to the SFC."

Mr Tsang thanked Mr Wheatley for his service in leading the SFC steadily through the turbulence of the global financial crisis.  He wishes him every success in his future endeavours.
