***********************************************

Woon Lee Construction Company Limited and Sharp Guide Limited were each fined $30,000 at Kowloon City Magistrates' Court today (December 8) for violation of the Occupational Safety and Health Regulation. The prosecutions were launched by the Labour Department.

The case involved a fatal accident that occurred on May 5 last year at a sheltered workshop in Hung Hom, in which a cleaning worker was killed by the collapse of a metal gate.

According to Section 3(2) of the Occupational Safety and Health Regulation, the person responsible for the workplace must ensure that the plant is maintained so that it is safe and without risk to the safety and health of persons who use the plant. Any person responsible for the workplace who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $50,000.
