Key Statistics on Operating Characteristics of the Information and Communications, Financing and Insurance, Professional and Business Services Sectors in 2009

     According to the results of the 2009 Annual Survey of Economic Activities ¡ª Information and Communications, Financing and Insurance, Professional and Business Services Sectors released today (December 7) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), the total receipts (comprising business receipts and other income) of the information and communications; financing; insurance; professional, scientific and technical activities; and administrative and support service activities sectors taken together amounted to $1,141.8 billion in 2009, representing an increase of 6.5% compared with 2008; on a per establishment basis, total receipts of these sectors increased by 0.7% compared with 2008 to $24.6 million in 2009.

     For all the afore-mentioned industry sectors taken together, operating expenses and compensation of employees altogether amounted to $552.5 billion in 2009, representing a decrease of 4.8% compared with 2008; on a per establishment basis, they decreased by 10.0% compared with 2008 to $11.9 million in 2009.

     Gross surplus of the information and communications; financing (except banking); professional, scientific and technical activities; and administrative and support service activities sectors taken together, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses, compensation of employees and value of purchases of goods for sale, increased by 1.4% over 2008 to $251.9 billion in 2009; on a per establishment basis, gross surplus decreased from $6.0 million in 2008 to $5.7 million in 2009.  Gross surplus accounted for 38.4% of total receipts for all these sectors taken together in 2009, up by 1.8 percentage points over 2008.

     Value added of the information and communications; financing (except banking); professional, scientific and technical activities; and administrative and support service activities sectors taken together, which provides a measure of their total contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, decreased by 2.3% compared with 2008 to $194.6 billion in 2009; on a per establishment basis, the value added was $4.7 million in 2009, which decreased by 7.7% compared with 2008.

     Owing to the special features of business operations in the banking and insurance industries, gross surplus and value added of these two industries were not compiled.  Within the financing (except banking) industry, value added of investment and holding companies was also not compiled for the same reason.

     According to the survey results, it was estimated that the information and communications; financing; insurance; professional, scientific and technical activities; and administrative and support service activities sectors taken together comprised some 46 400 establishments and engaged about 594 800 persons, or an average of 12.8 persons per establishment, in 2009.

     Amongst these industry sectors, the financing (except banking) industry recorded the largest total receipts in 2009, followed by the insurance and banking industries.  The other industry sectors in descending order in terms of total receipts were information and communications; administrative and support service activities; and professional, scientific and technical activities.

     In the financing (except banking) industry, total receipts amounted to $348.7 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $140.4 billion in 2009.  Gross surplus increased slightly from $202.7 billion in 2008 to $208.4 billion in 2009, accounting for 59.7% of total receipts in 2009.  Value added decreased by 10.6% compared with 2008 to $67.6 billion in 2009.

     In the insurance industry, total receipts amounted to $258.7 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $29.5 billion in 2009.  

     In the banking industry, total receipts amounted to $227.6 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $130.9 billion in 2009.

     In the information and communications sector, total receipts amounted to $118.5 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $87.7 billion in 2009.  Gross surplus decreased from $24.1 billion in 2008 to $22.1 billion in 2009, accounting for 18.6% of total receipts in 2009.  Value added decreased by 2.4% compared with 2008 to $46.9 billion.

     In the administrative and support service activities, total receipts amounted to $103.3 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $94.8 billion in 2009.  Gross surplus decreased from $6.9 billion in 2008 to $5.9 billion in 2009, accounting for 5.7% of total receipts in 2009.  Value added increased by 6.8% compared with 2008 to $35.3 billion.

     In the professional, scientific and technical activities, total receipts amounted to $84.9 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $69.1 billion in 2009.  Gross surplus increased from $14.7 billion in 2008 to $15.5 billion in 2009, accounting for 18.3% of total receipts in 2009.  Value added increased by 5.3% compared with 2008 to $44.9 billion.

     The classification of industries follows the Hong Kong Standard Industrial Classification (HSIC), which is used in various economic surveys for classifying economic units into different industry classes.  Upon the implementation of the HSIC Version 2.0 by the C&SD in October 2008, the new classification has been adopted in compiling statistics on the business performance and operating characteristics of various sectors starting from the reference year of 2009.  The series of the statistics on the business performance and operating characteristics of various sectors under the HSIC Version 2.0 has also been backcasted to the reference year of 2005 to facilitate comparison.
