More than 400 posters created by designers from different countries and regions will be showcased at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum from tomorrow (November 28) until May 23, 2011, offering viewers a colourful kaleidoscope of world cultures.
Entitled "Act·Live - the Hong Kong International Poster Triennial 2010", the exhibition was opened today (November 27) by the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Mrs Betty Fung; the Chairman of the Hong Kong Designers Association (2008/2010), Mr Winnif Pang; members of the judging panel, Mr Mathias Augustyniak from France, Mr Michel de Boer from the Netherlands, Mr David Tartakover from Israel and Dr Kan Tai-keung from Hong Kong; and the Chief Curator of the Heritage Museum, Ms Belinda Wong.
Mrs Fung noted that the Hong Kong International Poster Triennial, a major event on the calendar of the local design sector every three years and organised by the Heritage Museum, seeks to promote international cultural exchange and experience-sharing among designers on new developments in poster design, as well as to give recognition to the works of outstanding poster designers.
"Also, as a special 10th anniversary programme of the Heritage Museum, we have added two new thematic categories of awards to this year's competition - 'Act' and 'Live', apart from the three usual categories of awards, namely, 'Ideology', 'Promotion of Cultural Events' and 'Commercial and Advertising'. We hope the new thematic awards will help encourage people to act and live with a new way of thinking, thereby fostering creativity in every aspects of our lives," Mrs Fung said.
Jointly organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and the Hong Kong Designers Association, the triennial comprises three core elements - a competition, an exhibition and an international seminar. This triennial has attracted participation from 1,056 designers and groups from 43 countries and regions, who contributed 1,775 entries. A total of 190 entries with more than 300 posters were selected for display in the exhibition.
Apart from the gold, silver and bronze awards presented to the winners of the categories of Ideology, Promotion of Cultural Events, Commercial and Advertising and Thematic - "Act", the competition has also introduced two new awards - the Judges Awards and Young Generation Awards named after the five judges. It is hoped that while giving graphic designers their deserved recognition and support, these new awards can encourage and motivate young designers.
Representative poster works by the five judges of the competition, including Kenya Hara from Japan, Mathias Augustyniak from France, Michel de Boer from the Netherlands, David Tartakover from Israel, and Kan Tai-keung from Hong Kong, are also featured to perfectly reflect the curatorial perspective of the exhibition as a dynamic kaleidoscope of "Act" and "Live".
"Act" and "Live" are two thematic categories specially introduced in this competition. Most of the designers in this category use their attitudes towards life and personal values to express how they break free, cast aside the shackles and knock down dividing walls to interpret their notion of "Act". The theme "Live" encourages young designers to examine the "Act·Live" issue and blend creativity into life. They express and experience the rich and varied colours and meanings of life.
The "Act·Live - Hong Kong International Poster Triennial 2010" is the second in the exhibition series entitled "Creativity x Science x Art = ∞" organised by various museums under the LCSD this year. The two other exhibitions were "Marvellous Inventions of Leonardo da Vinci" by the Hong Kong Science Museum, and "Touching Art: Louvre's Sculptures in Movement", by the Hong Kong Museum of Art.
To encourage the public to grasp the opportunity to visit "Creativity x Science x Art = ∞" exhibition series, the LCSD's museums have launched a Visitor Reward Scheme. Visitors will get a specially designed souvenir umbrella by presenting three standard full-price admission tickets for each of the three exhibitions. Located at 1 Man Lam Road, Sha Tin, the Heritage Museum opens from 10am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 10am to 7pm on Sundays and public holidays. On Christmas Eve and Chinese New Year's Eve, the museum will close at 5pm. It is closed on Tuesdays (except public holidays) and the first two days of the Chinese New Year. Admission is $10, with a half-price concession for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and full-time students. Admission is free on Wednesdays.
Paid car parking is available at the Heritage Museum. Those who prefer to use public transport may take the MTR Ma On Shan Line and get off at the Che Kung Temple Station, which is within three minutes' walk of the museum.
