Music activist Kung Chi-shing will host a series of six lectures in January 2011 entitled "Music and Dance" (conducted in Cantonese). The lectures explore how contemporary choreographers integrate music, drama and video into contemporary western dance, and analyse how various art forms complement each other through the structure of rhythms and mood.

January 8, 2011 (Saturday)
Topic: Same music, different dance
We will examine how famous choreographers such as Lin Hwai-min and Mark Morris come up with entirely different dance with the same piece of music and using these examples, discuss the basic elements of music, and what choreographers hear in music.
January 9, 2011 (Sunday)
Topic: Jiri Kylian
Jiri Kylian is a choreographer with a deep understanding of the rhythmic nature of music. Samples of his work to be reviewed will include "Stamping Ground" (music by Chavez) and "Ballet in Black and White" (music by Bach, Mozart Webern and Reich).
January 15, 2011 (Saturday)
Topic: Rosas (Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker)
An exemplary figure using minimalism in dance. We will look at her famous "Fase" (music by Reich) and "Mikrokosmos/Quatuor" (music by Bartok).
January 16, 2011 (Sunday)
Topic: Matthew Bourne
A case study of how famous classics can be re-interpreted, such as "Swan Lake", "Nutcracker!" (music by Tchaikovsky) and "The Car Man" (based on "Carmen" by Bizet). We will find out how Bourne's works stand out within their modern context. We will also have Yuri Ng, an active local dancer, as special guest.

Topic: DV8 Physical Theatre (Lloyd Newson)
This is a fine example of how barriers between dance, theatre and personal politics can be totally broken down. We will look at "Dead Dreams of Monochrome Men" and "Strange Fish". This lecture includes Xing Liang, an award-winning dancer, as special guest.
January 23, 2011 (Sunday)
Topic: Pina Bausch
We will focus on her choreography of the 1970's which firmly established her on the international dance front, with examples drawn from "The Rite of Spring" (music by Stravinsky), "Caf M
ller" and "Blue Beard Castle" (music by Bartok).
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Kung Chi-shing is a composer, performer and music activist. He studied classical music and composition in the United States, and has collaborated with various dance groups and choreographers, including City Contemporary Dance Company, Hong Kong Dance Company, Hong Kong Ballet, Mui Cheuk-yin, Xing Liang, Willy Tsao and Yuri Ng.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Multi-Media Lecture Series: Music and Dance" by Kung Chi-shing (Conducted in Cantonese) will be held at 3.15pm at the Gallery, HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity. Tickets priced at $50 for each lecture are now available at URBTIX outlets, on Internet and by Credit Card Telephone Booking.
