The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (November 22) the November 2010 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

In this issue, three feature articles entitled "Hong Kong's Trade Involving Outward Processing in the Mainland of China, 1999 to 2009", "Labour Productivity Index for Major Economic Activities, 2000 to 2009" and "The Fertility Trend in Hong Kong, 1981 to 2009" are included.

"Hong Kong's Trade Involving Outward Processing in the Mainland of China, 1999 to 2009"

Outward processing activities play an important role in Hong Kong's trade with the mainland of China (the Mainland).  According to the findings of the Survey on Trade Involving Outward Processing in the Mainland of China conducted by C&SD, the proportions of Hong Kong's trade with the Mainland involving outward processing activities remained significant in 2009, ranging from 27% in domestic exports to the Mainland to 68% in re-exports of the Mainland origin to other places.

Feature articles addressing this subject have been published in this Digest regularly since 1995.  This feature article describes Hong Kong's trade involving outward processing in the Mainland during the period from 1999 to 2009.

"Labour Productivity Index for Major Economic Activities, 2000 to 2009"

Labour Productivity Index (LPI) is an important economic indicator of an economy.  It shows how efficiently labour input is used for generating real output and is very useful for analysing the contribution of changes in labour productivity to various industries and the economy as a whole.  Factors affecting changes in LPI include changes in technology, organisational structures, management practices and capital, etc.

This feature article outlines the methodology and data sources currently used for compiling LPIs in Hong Kong, and analyses the LPIs for various major economic activities during 2000 to 2009.
