Public reminded to maintain anti-mosquito measures during autumn
**********************************************************

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) reminded the public to keep up anti-mosquito measures and stay alert to the risk of mosquito-transmitted diseases, despite the recent cooler weather.

An FEHD spokesman said today (November 19) that the monthly average ovitrap index for October had dropped to 3.4% from 8% in September.  The ovitrap indices reflect the prevalence of Aedes albopictus, a mosquito vector for dengue fever transmission.

Among the 38 areas surveyed last month, positive ovitrap indices were recorded in 29 areas, ranging from 1.7% to 11.3%, with the highest in Wong Tai Sin Central.

As for port areas, the average ovitrap index rose slightly from 0.8% in September to 0.9% in October.

"Although the indices for October are lower than those for September, in view of the confirmed local cases of dengue fever in September, the departments concerned will continue their stepped-up inspection and measures to enhance environmental hygiene conditions in areas under their ambits, to eliminate existing and potential mosquito-breeding grounds, in addition to the regular weekly programme. The FEHD will strengthen control measures whenever necessary," the spokesman said.

Aedes albopictus breeds in small water bodies. The spokesman advised the public and estate management bodies to scrub all drains and surface sewers, and limewash them with alkaline detergent compound at least once a week to remove any mosquito eggs. They should also keep the drains free from blockage and fill up all depressions to prevent puddles.

People should inspect their homes and surroundings to remove potential breeding grounds; scrub vases and pot plant saucers at least once a week; properly dispose of containers such as soft drink cans and lunch boxes; and drill large holes in unused tyres.

The ovitrap indices and information on anti-mosquito measures under the Anti-mosquito Weekly Inspection Programme are available on the department's website (www.fehd.gov.hk).
