Wong On-yuen, this year's Best Artist (Music) award-winner, will collaborate with his son, Wong Sun-tat, and pipa player Yu Jia for three recitals in December.
The huqin recitals will begin at 7.30pm, December 18 (Saturday), 2.30pm and 7.30pm, December 19 (Sunday) at the Xiang Hai Xuan Multi-purpose Hall, Nan Lian Garden. The virtuosi will perform a series of well-known Chinese compositions, including "A Trip to Taixing Mountain", "A Beautiful Night" (Hong Kong Premiere), "Moonlit Night", "Reflections of the Moon on the Waters", "Melody on a Single String", "Pulling the Camel", "Pipa Melody" (Hong Kong Premiere), "Torrents of River", "Autumn Moon in the Han Palace", "The Forlorn Drifter", "Dance of the Yi's" and "Ambuscade From All Sides".
Wong On-yuen was the first erhu master to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York. He was also concertmaster of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra for 27 years, making 130 performances. He was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1997.
Wong Sun-tat is currently gaohu associate principal with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra. He was educated at the middle school affiliated to the Central Conservatory of Music before entering the conservatory proper, where he graduated with a degree in music. Wong was the first overseas student at the Conservatory since the 1970s to be awarded a Chinese government scholarship. He was also the only contestant from Hong Kong to win top awards in international erhu competitions. Wong began performing at the age of seven, and went on to perform at concert halls in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and the United States.
The "Huqin Recital by Wong On-yuen & Wong Sun-tat" is a programme of the Nan Lian Garden Chinese Music Series, presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets priced at $220 (free seating) are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients may receive a 50% discount (limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20% is offered for the Nan Lian Garden Chinese Music series package and group bookings.
Other attractions in the Nan Lian Garden Chinese Music Series include "Erhu Recital by Xu Ke", "The Classic Charm of Kunqu", "Pipa Recital by Zhang Hongyan", "The Chinese Flute with Quaint Charm - Xiao Recital by Tam Po-shek" and "Zheng Recital by Wang Zhongshan".
