Police neutralise shop theft syndicate
**************************************

Police arrested five people for conspiracy to steal in Yuen Long on Monday (November 8) evening and believed to have neutralised a shop theft syndicate.

Officers of Crime Headquarters of the New Territories South (NTS) Region, based on intelligence and after in-depth investigations, raided a unit at the Yuen Long Section of Castle Peak Road and seized over 1,000 pieces of garment, worth about $100,000. Three men and two women, aged between 40 and 50, were arrested at the scene. Two of them were illegal immigrants. In the operation, officers also seized a number of suitcases and handbags fitted with tin foil and records of stolen goods amounting to $5 million.

Among the arrestees, a 43-year-old Vietnamese man and a 40-year-old Vietnamese woman were believed to be the masterminds. Initial investigations revealed that they at an earlier time recruited Vietnamese illegal immigrants into stealing garment from fashion stores on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon and then sold the garment overseas by post. It was believed that the syndicate has been in operation for at least five months.

The five people, who were arrested for conspiracy to steal and handling stolen goods, are still being detained. Investigations by NTS Regional Crime Unit are underway.
