Russian choir to greet Christmas season
***************************************

The State Symphony Capella of Russia will perform two concerts in Hong Kong this Christmas. Under the baton of Music Director and Chief Conductor Valery Polyanskiy, the group will showcase the beautiful sound of Russian chorals.

The State Symphony Capella of Russia was founded in 1991 by the merging of the former USSR State Chamber Choir under Valery Polyanskiy, and the State Symphony Orchestra of the former USSR Ministry of Culture headed by Gennady Rozhdestvensky.

The Capella is renowned for its rich, warm tone, its flexibility in phrasing, nobility of expression and skillfully balanced harmonics. The choir's repertoire includes classical works by composers such as Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Brahms, as well as traditional Russian folk songs. To tie in with the festive season, the Capella will also perform some popular Christmas carols.

Apart from performing in Russia, the Capella has toured in Spain, Hungary, France, Holland, Germany, Sweden, Canada, England, Italy and other European countries. Over the years, the Capella has received critical acclaim for its flawless technique, clear and precise intonation and poetic lyricism.  In 2005, the group also made a debut tour to the Far East, visiting Hong Kong and Mainland China to celebrate Christmas.

The concerts of The State Symphony Capella of Russia, one of the attractions of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department's "Cheers!" series, will be staged at 8pm, December 23 (Thursday) at the Auditorium of Yuen Long Theatre; and at 4pm, December 25 (Saturday) at the Auditorium of Tsuen Wan Town Hall.
