City Contemporary Dance Company brings Hong Kong and Shanghai stories to life at World Expo (with photos)
******************************************************

The City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) will tell the stories of Hong Kong and Shanghai in two glittering productions at World Expo 2010 Shanghai China (Shanghai Expo).

In the first production, "DELT", CCDC Artistic Director Willy Tsao teams up with talented young Hong Kong choreographers Daniel Yeung and Ong Yong Lock to present this site-specific dance gala on June 19 and 20 (Saturday and Sunday). Performances will take place at Shanghai's two leading shopping malls - Shanghai Times Square and PLAZA 353. Admission to the performances is free.

Performed jointly by the CCDC and BeijingDance/LDTX, "DELT" celebrates the vibrancy of Hong Kong's unique culture and its influence on the lifestyles of Chinese people.

According to Mr Tsao, "DELT" is an acronym for "Dressing, Eating, Living, Travelling" which is a commonly used Chinese phrase to describe the four essential elements of everyday life.

Mr Tsao said: "Shopping malls are adopted as performing venues to depict vividly contemporary lifestyles and experiences in metropolises like Hong Kong and Shanghai.

"Dancers will incorporate improvisation in the piece. They will perform in different corners of the shopping malls before converging in a centre point at the end of the dance to conclude in a climax."

Another work is "Tales of Two Cities - Hong Kong?Shanghai?Eileen Chang" by Resident Choreographer Helen Lai. It will be staged on June 25 (Friday) at the Drama Theatre of the Shanghai Grand Theatre.

Here, the stories of Shanghai and Hong Kong, the two most dynamic powerhouses in China, are told through the eyes of legendary author Eileen Chang, whose works include "Love in a Fallen City" and
"Aloeswood Incense: The First Brazier".

In celebration of the writer's 90th birthday, Ms Lai reconstructs Ms Chang's life and times in her twilight years, with intriguing flashbacks to her golden days and the characters she created in her masterpieces.

During the Shanghai Expo period, 24 groups from Hong Kong will participate in 26 programmes comprising 70 performances at the Expo site and other prominent performing arts venues in Shanghai. Four visual arts exhibitions will also be presented as key components of the cultural programme.
