Festival-goers today (May 16) enjoyed climbing the bun tower frame at the Climbing Carnival of the 2010 Bun Carnival held at the Cheung Chau Pak Tai Temple Playground soccer pitch.

Participants in the carnival climbed the 14-metre-tall bun tower frame set up for the Bun Scrambling Competition on May 21. They also made wishes on the "wishing bun tower" and look forward to their wishes coming true.

Officiating at the opening ceremony of the Climbing Carnival were the Chairman of Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee, Mr Yung Chi-ming; Chief Leisure Manager (New Territories West) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), Miss Sylvia Tang; the Director of the Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee, Mr To Kwong-biu; the President of Cheung Chau Wai Chiu County Association Limited, Mr Chan Man-kong; members of the Islands District Council, Mr Kwong Kwok-wai, Mr Leung Siu-tong and Ms Lee Kwai-chun; and Divisional Commander (Cheung Chau) of the Hong Kong Police Force, Mr Mak Pui-yuen.

During the Carnival, four teams from local tertiary institutions and nine teams representing government departments and commercial and industrial organisations competed in the invitation relays. The championships went to Hong Kong Fire Services Department and Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Chai Wan) Team 1.

Participants in the carnival had fun at the games stalls featuring climbing sport, greening and environmental protection messages and Chinese handicrafts, climbing demonstrations by the Hong Kong Mountaineering Union and the variety shows staged at the venue.

A total of 12 finalists comprising nine men and three women will take part in the Bun Scrambling Competition, the finale of 2010 Bun Carnival, to be held from 11.30pm on May 21 to 12.30am on May 22 at the Cheung Chau Pak Tai Temple Playground soccer pitch.

The 2010 Bun Carnival is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee and the LCSD, and is co-organised by Cheung Chau Wai Chiu County Association Limited, the Cheung Chau Rural Committee, Islands District Office and Hong Kong Mountaineering Union, and sponsored by Lukfook Jewellery, Watsons Water and the Islands District Council.
