Acting CIT congratulates CUHK students on winning Challenge Cup (with photos)

     The Acting Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Mr Andrew Lai, today (May 10) congratulated students of the Chinese University of Hong Kong on winning the Hong Kong and Macao District Trophy in the 11th Challenge Cup, a national competition of extra-curricular academic and technological projects by university students.

     Addressing the opening ceremony of the Student Achievements in Innovation and Entrepreneurship Exhibition 2010, Mr Lai said that winning the championship four times in a row was a marvellous achievement by the Chinese University of Hong Kong.  This reflected the outstanding innovative and entrepreneurial spirit of the students as well as the strong inspiration and support of the university and their teachers.

     Mr Lai said that innovation and technology had been identified as one of the six industries with great potential in Hong Kong. The Innovation and Technology Commission has been promoting the development of technology and applied research and enhancing innovation culture in the community. Mr Lai called for concerted efforts by all sectors to improve daily life and to promote the economy through innovation and creative ideas.

     Mr Lai toured some of the award winners of the Challenge Cup, covering various areas such as medical and health, green architecture, town planning and renewable energy.

     The biennial Challenge Cup is generally considered the "technology Olympics" for university students in China.
