Ten cutting-edge Japanese artists across digital media, technology, theatre and dance, coming from the groups Dumb Type, AbsT, rhizomatiks, Softpad, DGN and VPP, will collaborate next month (June) in a new sound, light and dance performance, entitled "true", to explore the relationship between the brain, our sensory perception and the reality we face.
We think we can see an unlimited number of colours in nature, but in fact our brain sensory functions combine only three light waves. How many variations we create depends on the sensitivity of our retina and our brain in response to impinging stimuli. Many so-called "facts and realities" we believe to have indisputable, objective external existence are actually generated day by day. Furthermore, much of the sensory data we think we receive has actually been filtered before reaching the brain.
"true" leads the audience to realise that time and space as we perceive them are merely provisional, and are re-acquainted with what our senses can know. With the performers wearing electrodes (myoelctectic sensors) on their bodies, this system detects the small electric currents generated by the muscles right before they contract upon receiving commands from the brain. The detected electric current in turn is transformed into audio signals and sent wirelessly to a computer in the operation booth, and instantly interpreted and transformed to create different sounds and command signals to control the LED lighting and video images. "true" creates a completely synchronous and totally new sensory experience.
The creative team of "true" includes Takayuki Fujimoto (direction/ lighting design), Tsuyoshi Shirai (choreography/ dance performance), Takao Kawaguchi (choreography/ text /dance), Daito Manabe (sound/ oscillation/ programming), Takuya Minami (sound/ video/ visual design), Satoshi Horii (video/ programming/ web), Seiichi Saito and Motoi Ishibashi (mechanics), Masaki Teruoka (myoelectric sensing/ vibration mechanism support) and Noriko Kitamura (costume design).
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "true" will be staged at 8pm on June 18, 19 and 20 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) at the Studio Theatre, Kong Kong Cultural Centre.
Tickets priced at $180 and $250 are now available at URBTIX outlets. Senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients may have 50% off (limited quotas for students and CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis).
