Warning on peanut granola bars with possible Salmonella contamination
********************************************************

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) today (January 29) advised people not to consume certain batches of organic peanut granola bars manufactured by Lovin Oven which are suspected of being contaminated with Salmonella.

US authorities said the manufacturer concerned was recalling the product in the country. Details of the product are as follows:

Product name: Health Valley brand "Organic Peanut Crunch Chewy Granola Bars" (6.1 oz box)
Unit UPC Code: 0-35742 15483-4
Lot codes (expiry date): 13JUN09, 14JUN09 and 28JUN09

"The CFS has been in close contact with the US authorities in regard to the possible Salmonella contamination incident in the US. The US authorities have pledged to inform the CFS of any affected products found to have been exported to Hong Kong. CFS has collected 15 samples of peanut butter and its related product for testing of salmonella and all results are satisfactory.

"The US authorities informed us today that the peanut granola bars might have been exported to Hong Kong. The centre will continue its investigations," a CFS spokesman said.

Salmonella is a pathogen that may cause food poisoning. The symptoms include nausea, fever, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and vomiting. The symptoms are more severe in infants and the elderly.

"The CFS has alerted the trade to stop selling the particular product and is closely monitoring the situation," the spokesman said.
