sportACT Carnival cum 2009 sportACT Month Launching (with photos)

     The "sportACT Award Scheme" (sportACT), introduced by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), will be given added impetus from today (January 17) by launching the "2009 sportACT Month". The sportACT was implemented in 2006 to encourage students of primary, secondary and special schools to actively participate in sports activities regularly so as to enhance their physical fitness.

     A launching ceremony of the sportACT Carnival cum 2009 sportACT Month was held this morning at the Shek Kip Mei Park, officiated by the Chief Leisure Manager (Sports Development) of LCSD, Ms Annie Lam, and the Chief Curriculum Officer (Physical Education) of the Education Bureau, Mr Tony Lai. The 2009 East Asian Games mascots, "Dony" and "Ami" were also present to meet the students.

     The sportACT is a subsidiary programme of the School Sports Programme aimed at encouraging students to select a suitable sports for continuous participation to form part of their daily habit.  Certificates will be awarded to students according to their levels of participation.

     To further enhance the "sportACT Award Scheme", the "2009 sportACT Month" will be commenced today until February 28.  During which participating primary, secondary and special schools can make their own arrangements for students to take part collectively in sports lasting not less than 20 minutes so as to encourage students to participate in sports activities.

     At today's sportACT Carnival cum 2009 sportACT Month, the LCSD in conjunction with 25 National Sports Associations (NSAs), organised a wide range of activities including stage performances, sport demonstrations, plays-in and skill-testing sessions staged by athletes and coaches from the related NSAs. These activities furnished participating students with opportunities to enjoy sports and to advocate "One Student, One Sport".
