The Director of Highways, Mr Wai Chi-sing, today (January 16) officiated at the ground-breaking ceremony for the reconstruction and improvement of Tuen Mun Road - Eastern Section with the Chairman of Tuen Mun District Council, Mr Lau Wong-fat, and the Chairman of Tsuen Wan District Council, Mr Chau How-chen.
Mr Wai said at the ceremony, "Tuen Mun Road, designed and built in the 1970s, has been in service for more than 30 years. The reconstruction and improvement works will upgrade the road to the current design standard, to provide users with enhanced road safety and cope with the anticipated growth in traffic and urban development."
The reconstruction and improvement of the whole Tuen Mun Road project (Expressway Section) from Tsuen Wan to Sam Shing Hui of about 15.5km comprises three contracts - Eastern Section, Tai Lam Section and Sam Shing Hui Section. The project will be completed in stages in 2014. The proposed works will create more than 2,000 jobs which will help to improve the current employment situation.
The works recently started are the 6.8km long Eastern Section from Tsuen Wan to Tsing Lung Tau, which is the first contract tendered. The works include widening of traffic lanes, provision of hard shoulders, construction of highway structures, as well as the associated environmental mitigation measures, drainage, slope and landscaping works. The Eastern Section Contract, which was awarded to Gammon Construction Limited last October, is scheduled for completion in 2014.
