Importation of Jiangsu poultry eggs suspended

     The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) announced today (December 16) that importation of poultry eggs from  Jiangsu Province into Hong Kong would be suspended with immediate effect.

     "The decision was taken following confirmation of H5N1 avian influenza involving chickens in the province," a CFS spokesman said.

     "According to the information from the State General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine , there are four registered egg processing plants in Jiangsu Province. We understand that no poultry
eggs have been imported from Jiangsu into Hong Kong in recent years. Nonetheless, the importation of poultry eggs from Jiangsu Province into Hong Kong would be suspended with immediate effect.

     "According to CFS' records, there is no live poultry, chilled/frozen poultry meat imported into Hong Kong from Jiangsu Province in 2008."
