The Hong Kong China Philharmonic Orchestra will collaborate with young violinist Wong Kwan-hung, cellist Nie Jiapeng and renowned soprano Evelyn Chiu to give a concert in January.
Under the baton of its artistic director Lim Kek-han, the orchestra and the musicians will play Schubert's Overture "Rosamunde", Mendelssohn's "Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op.64", Tchaikovsky's "Variations on a Rococo Theme in A, Op.33" and Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op.67". Chiu will also perform Kazakh folk song "My Flower", Indonesian folk song "Solo River" and "My Lovely Baby".
Born in Hong Kong, Wong Kwan-hung learned to play violin at the age of four and studied under violinist Lim Kek-han at age seven. He passed the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music Grade Eight Examination and Advanced Certificate. He went to Australia to continue his study of violin performance and participated in the school's orchestra and other performances. He has been the principal violinist of the Hong Kong China Philharmonic Orchestra for many years.
Nie Jiapeng started learning cello with Zhang Yihao and renowned Russian cellist Artem Konstantinov at the age of nine. He was admitted to the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at the National University of Singapore in August 2005, and continued to study cello with famous cellist Qin Liwei. During this period, he performed in many solo and quartet concerts and received high praise from all circles.
The Hong Kong China Philharmonic Orchestra originated from the Lim Kek Han Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1977, with Lim as the music director and principal conductor. The orchestra holds a number of concerts every year, bringing different kinds of music to its audiences. Soloists and guest conductors have also been invited from the Mainland and overseas to perform with the orchestra.
The concert by the Hong Kong China Philharmonic Orchestra is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be held at the Auditorium, Tsuen Wan Town Hall, at 8pm on Saturday, January 10, 2009. Tickets priced at $60, $90 and $120 are now available at URBTIX outlets. Senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients may have 50% off (limited quotas for CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis).
