LCSD launches annual cultural schemes for schools
*************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has launched the 2008-09 ¡°School Arts Animateur Scheme¡± (SAAS) and ¡°School Culture Day Scheme¡± (SCDS). Senior Manager (Audience Building) of the LCSD Ms Heidi Chu, Senior Curriculum Development Officer of the Education Bureau Mr Tam Wang-bui, and representatives of 12 SAAS participating arts groups, presented the concept and content of the schemes and upcoming projects to school delegates at a briefing session today (May 13).

Ms Chu said,¡°To tie in with the implementation of the ¡®New Senior Secondary School Curriculum¡¯ from September, 2009, which will include aesthetics experience as part of the new curriculum, a pilot scheme for senior secondary school students will be introduced this year to provide them with a number of arts programmes that will enable them to experience arts through seeing, creativity, performing and relection. Details of the pilot scheme will be announced later.¡±

The positioning of the SCDS will be adjusted so performing arts programmes to be provided under the scheme will mainly cater for primary and junior secondary students with the aim of giving them a basic knowledge of and arousing their interests in different forms of performing arts. Apart from performing arts programmes, the SCDS will continue to provide activities at LCSD museums and libraries for Primary One to Form Seven students.

Working jointly with local professional performing arts groups with proven experience and artistic standard, the SAAS will be expanded to 12 programmes this year to cover more performing arts activities ranging from dance, multimedia arts, musicals to drama and music, for 89 schools. Last year there were eight programmes for 80 schools. The participating arts groups this year are: Chung Ying Theatre Company, Prospects Theatre, Exploration Theatre, Theatre Space, Class 7A Drama Group, Hong Kong Composers¡¯ Guild, Unlock Dancing Plaza, Shu Ning Presentation Unit, City Contemporary Dance Company, Hong Kong Ballet, Hong Kong 3 Arts Musical Institute and DanceArt Hong Kong.

Both schemes are presented by the LCSD. More than 810,000 students from about 960 schools have participated in the SCDS in the past seven years, and more than 400 schools have taken part in the SAAS since 2000.
