The festive Bun Scrambling Competition, the finale of the Bun Carnival 2008, had a successful end early this morning (May 13) at the soccer pitch of Pak Tai Temple Playground on Cheung Chau.
The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, launched the competition by hitting a gong. The 12 finalists climbed the 14-metre-tall bun tower and had three minutes to snatch as many buns for the highest scores.
After an exciting competition, the championship eventually went to Lai Chi-wai, who scored 778 marks. The first runner-up, Kwok Ka-ming, scored 715 marks. The second runner-up went to Cheung Man-cheung, who scored 661 marks.
Divided into three zones, the bun tower was studded with buns, from the top to the bottom, representing nine, three and one marks. For easy identification, the buns had special colour stamps on the bottoms. The contestant who scored the highest marks from all the buns snatched was the champion.
Teams from outside Hong Kong were invited to join the Invitation Relay to compete against teams from Cheung Chau. The four teams were Kailas Adventure Team from Guangzhou, Shenzhen Mountaineering and Outdoorsports Association, Zhuhai Mountaineering and Expedition Association and Clube de Escalada Guia Macau.
Two members of each team had to get specified buns on the bun tower in relay in the shortest time. Shenzhen Mountaineering and Outdoorsports Association won the championship in 2 minutes and 9.08 seconds while Cheung Chau Sai Wan Ma Sing Temple Management Association was the first runner-up in a time of 2 minutes and 9.43 seconds. The second runner-up, Spirit Sports Association, took 2 minutes and 9.79 seconds to finish the race.
Organised by the Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Bun Scrambling Competition received support from the Cheung Chau Wai Chiu County Association Limited, Cheung Chau Rural Committee, Islands District Office of the Home Affairs Department and the Hong Kong Mountaineering Union, and sponsored by the Islands District Council and 3-D Gold Jewellery.
The final attracted 1,500 spectators.
