By making on-site applications for the bun tower climbing play-in of the "Climbing Carnival" jointly organised by the Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), people got a chance to climb the 14-metre tall bun tower which will be used for the Bun Scrambling Competition on May 12.

Officiating at the opening ceremony of the "Climbing Carnival" were the Chairman of Cheung Chau Rural Committee, Mr Yung Chi-ming; Chief Leisure Manager (New Territories West) of the LCSD, Ms Sylvia Tang; Assistant District Officer (Islands District) of the Home Affairs Department, Mr Sylvester Wong; the Director of Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee, Mr To Kwong-biu; the President of Cheung Chau Wai Chiu County Association Limited, Mr Hai Chun-sum; Islands District Councillors, Mr Kwong Kwok-wai and Ms Li Kwai-chun; Operation Support Commander of the Hong Kong Police Force Cheung Chau Division, Mr John Tang; Consultant of the Hong Kong Mountaineering Union, Mr Chung Kin-man and Senior Manager, Corporate Communications Department of 3-D GOLD Jewellery, Ms Stella Lai.

Eight teams representing local tertiary institutions and disciplinary forces competed in the invitation relay introduced this year. Representatives from the Fire Services Department finished the relay at the shortest time of 3 minutes and 38 seconds and won the championship.

People also enjoyed the games stalls featuring the themes of climbing sport, Olympism and Chinese handicrafts, and variety shows like magic performances and traditional Chinese entertainment, which were staged in the soccer pitch.

A total of 12 finalists selected on Saturday afternoon (May 3) will enter the Bun Scrambling Competition to be held from 11.30pm on May 12 to 12.30am on May 13 at the Cheung Chau Pak Tai Temple Playground soccer pitch.
