The Hong Kong Museum of Art will hold the exhibition 'In Salute to Tong King Sum' from today (April 18) to May 22 as a tribute to the late local sculptor who passed away on February 29 this year.
The exhibition opens today. It features four sculptures by Tong from the collection of the Museum of Art. They are "Fruits" (1973 ¡ª 1975), 'Back' (1979), 'Three Images' (1980s), 'Wings'(1984) and an unfinished work ' Unfinished Art Piece' (2007). There is also an unfinished piece of artwork which was intended for the 2007 annual exhibition of the Hong Kong Visual Arts Society. This work was named by the sculptor's widow, Mrs Tong Chiu Wai-yee, who lent it to the exhibition.
The Chief Curator of the Museum of Art, Mr Tang Hoi-chiu said he was impressed not only by Tong's artistic creations but also because he was a man of perseverance and persistence. Mr Tang said the artist, despite physical constraints, successfully mastered the art of sculpture, an art form that posed great challenges to him. His wooden sculptures reveal the essence of simplicity with linear configurations and textures that convey a strong sense of the beauty of natural harmony and forms.
The Museum of Art is located at 10 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon. It opens from 10am to 6pm from Sunday to Wednesday and Fridays, and from 10am to 8pm on Saturdays. It is closed on Thursdays (except public holidays). Admission is $10 and a half-price concession is available to full-time students, senior citizens and people with disabilities. Admission is free on Wednesdays.
