Voluntary Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme extended to hot/cold bottled water dispensers
*********************************************************

    The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) today (April 17) extends the voluntary Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme (EELS) to cover hot/cold bottled water dispensers.

    The department is inviting manufacturers, importers and local agents of hot/cold bottled water dispensers to apply for the "Recognition Type" energy label under the voluntary EELS.

    To qualify for this type of label, the product should meet the energy efficiency and performance requirements of the scheme.  A label will be affixed to the product, informing consumers that it meets a certain standard of energy efficiency.  With this information, consumers can make better purchasing decisions.

    Apart from helping consumers to select the more energy-efficient products, EELS also aims to:

(a) increase public awareness of the importance of using energy-efficient products;
(b) encourage  manufacturers and product suppliers to market more energy-efficient products; and
(c) achieve actual savings in energy bills.

    With the inclusion of hot/cold bottled water dispensers, there are 18 types of household and office appliances covered by the voluntary EELS, which was introduced  in 1995.

    Information about the EELS is available at the EMSD homepage (www.emsd.gov.hk).  Enquiries about the extension of the voluntary EELS can be made by post to the Energy Efficiency Office of the EMSD at 3 Kai Shing Street, Kowloon, or by telephone at 2808 3465.
