Wild ducks found in Lok Ma Chau diagnosed with Botulinum toxicosis
*********************************************************

Laboratory testing of the 51 dead wild ducks found in Lok Ma Chau last month supported a diagnosis of toxicity due to ingestion of Clostridium botulinum toxin (Botulism), a spokesman for the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) said today (April 11).

The bird carcasses including eight Northern Shovelers and 43 Eurasian Wigeons were collected at the wetland compensation area of MTR Lok Ma Chau Spurline on March 25. These wild ducks are common winter migratory birds found in Hong Kong.

AFCD confirmed earlier that they had all tested negative for the H5 virus.

Botulism is a disease caused by toxins produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. The bacteria can be found in soil and sediments of lakes. Sporadic outbreaks of avian botulism, usually involving migrating waterfowl, are well documented globally and are usually seasonal in nature.

The department will continue its wild bird monitoring and surveillance.

To report dead or sick birds, members of the public can call the Government hotline 1823.
