The Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra and Purple Lee will jointly perform world music later this month.
Purple Lee, compere, narrator and singer, will lead the audience on an exciting adventure to discover music around the world. The concerts will be under the baton of conductors Chan Chiu-yiu and Cheng Yuk.
The programme includes African drums and orchestra ensemble, xylophone solo, dizi solo, plucked-string ensemble, percussion ensemble, saxophone and erhu, as well as Purple Lee's solo performance with the orchestra and storytelling through music.
Purple Lee won seven consecutive TVB Children's Song gold awards and was named the Most Popular Female Vocalist for Children's Songs at the Metro Broadcasts Prize Presentation Ceremony for Popular Children's Songs. She has been dubbed "the new diva of children's songs". In 2007, her album, which features storytelling through children's songs, was sold out within a day, achieving record sales of 18,000.
The Hong Kong YWCA Orchestra has organised regular performances to introduce Chinese folk music of different styles to the public and to provide training and performing opportunities to local young musicians. In recent years, the orchestra has collaborated with an array of music virtuosi, including conductor Xia Feiyun, Jing Jianshu, Wang Fujian, dizi soloists Li Zhen, Ma Di, matouqin Qi Baoligao, pipa soloists Yang Wei, banhu/jinghu soloist Jiang Kemei, yangqin soloist Zhang Gaoxiang, suona and guanzi soloist Guo Yazhi, erhu soloist He Tao, and gaohu/erhu soloist Yang Xue, as well as local musicians such as conductors Wai Sing-fat, Pang Yui-sing, Ho Man-chuen and suona/guanzi soloist Lo Wai-leung. In 2007, the orchestra performed a joint concert in Melbourne, Australia, with the Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra. The performances have received great acclaim from audiences and critics alike.
"The World of Music through Purple's Eyes", one of many attractions of the "Family Fiesta 2008" presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, will be staged on the following dates:
