Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA)'s retrospective "In Memory of Lydia Sum" to commemorate the comedienne's inspiring on-screen performances will run from tomorrow (March 7) until March 16 with 12 films, ranging from her teen years to her mature roles.
One of the leading actresses of the Cantonese classic "Teddy Girls", Nancy Sit Kar-yin will meet the audience during the opening screening at 7pm tomorrow at the Cinema of the HKFA.
The second screening at 9.15pm tomorrow will be "It's a Mad Mad Mad World" in which Sum plays a housewife who dreams of getting rich. In a video before screening of the film, Director Clifton Ko will share with the audience his recollection on Sum's performance. The film will also be shown on March 13 at 5.15pm at the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Science Museum.
Being a film and television comedienne for more than 40 years, Lydia Sum brought joy to the lives of Hong Kong people and overseas Chinese communities with her trademark laughter. She appeared in more than 160 films, playing a wide variety of characters in vastly different movie genres. She was talented in many ways: acting, singing and dancing; but her best talent was to make people happy.
The 12 films ranging from 1962 to 2004 depicting different periods of Sum’s career will be screened at the Cinema of HKFA, the Lecture Halls of the Hong Kong Science Museum and the Hong Kong Space Museum.
Selected films comprise Lydia's childhood work with Betty Loh Ti "Dream of the Red Chamber"; classic "Teddy Girls"; comic adapted film "Master Cute and Tai Fan Shu"; melodramas "Four Sisters", "Three Flowers of the Factory", "First Love Forever", "Lovely Husbands" and "The House of 72 Tenants"; films collaborating with Bill Tung "It's a Mad Mad Mad World", "Double Fattiness", "Mother vs Mother" and her swansong "In-laws, Out-laws".
All films except "Four Sisters", "Master Cute and Tai Fan Shu", "First Love Forever", "Three Flowers of the Factory" and "Lovely Husbands" have English subtitles. There are no marked seats for any of the screenings.
Tickets are available at all URBTIX outlets. As with other HKFA retrospective programmes, tickets are priced at HK$30, with half-price concession for senior citizens aged 60 or over, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
