Works by Hong Kong Visual Arts Society artists on display (with photos)
**********************************************************

The first solo exhibition of the latest "Artists in the Neighbourhood Scheme IV" (AIN), "Inheritance - 35th Anniversary Exhibition of Hong Kong Visual Arts Society", will be held from tomorrow (March 7) to March 19 at the Exhibition Hall of Hong Kong City Hall Low Block and from March 28 to April 6 at Crystal Atrium, Metroplaza, Kwai Fong.

The Art Promotion Office launched the AIN in 2001 with the aim of promoting both public participation and the creation of art. The scheme has won the passionate support and participation of the local arts community, making it possible for many excellent artworks to be shown in local communities. In the AIN IV, the Hong Kong Visual Arts Society (HKVAS) was selected to organise "Inheritance - 35th Anniversary Exhibition of Hong Kong Visual Arts Society" to inaugurate the exhibition series under the scheme.

HKVAS, founded by art and design students at the Extra-Mural Development of the University of Hong Kong, is this year celebrating its 35th anniversary. Today, members of the society consist of renowned veteran artists and young talents. With a strong passion for art and a determination to promote creativity, the society has organised many innovative art activities, including art fairs, artwork criticism sessions and artist-in-residence programmes, to promote the visual arts in Hong Kong.

Titled "Inheritance", the exhibition conveys the message that the society is committed to promoting local arts and passing on the mission to new generations. To better convey the message, the exhibition at the Hong Kong City Hall Low Block will be divided into three areas - the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, to show works of members created in different periods. Meanwhile, other artists outside the society were also invited to join the exhibition to promote mutual exchanges. The exhibits range from Chinese and Western paintings, to sculpture, pottery and installations. During the exhibition a major visual arts seminar will be held to provide the forum for mutual exchange and sharing among different art communities.

The second part of the exhibition will be staged at the Metroplaza in Kwai Fong where postcard designs, "My view on Visual Arts", by a group of local primary and secondary school students will also be displayed. Moreover, members of the society will organise artist-in-residence programmes at secondary schools and tertiary institutes and an art fair in the district, so as to promote art education and foster the development of local art communities in a practical way.

The Hong Kong City Hall Low Block is located at 5 Edinburgh Place, Central. Its Exhibition Hall is open daily from 10am to 8pm. The Metroplaza is located at 223 Hing Fong Road, Kwai Fong. It is open from 10am to 10pm. Admission to both exhibitions is free.
