SCED visits Kwai Tsing District (with photos)
*********************************************

The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Frederick Ma, visited Kwai Tsing District today (March 5) to learn more about the community facilities and development.

Accompanied by District Officer (Kwai Tsing), Mr Allan Chow, Mr Ma first visited the Tsing Yi Integrated Services Centre of the Women Service Association at Cheung Hong Estate in Tsing Yi. Opened in 2001, the centre provides services such as training courses and community education for residents in the district.

Mr Ma met some participants of an employees' retraining course at the centre and encouraged them to keep learning for self-enhancement in order to achieve the goals of self-reliance and supporting others.

He then proceeded to Caritas Jockey Club Lai King Rehabilitation Centre. The centre is one of the largest rehabilitation establishments, with facilities that include a long stay care home, a half-way house, and an integrated vocational rehabilitation centre. The centre also provides services such as occupational therapy and vocational rehabilitation training for former mentally ill people.

A social enterprise called "La Vie Bakery" was set up by the centre in 2005 to provide bakery apprenticeship training and employment opportunities for rehabilitated people. Mr Ma was pleased to learn that the bakery had recorded remarkable sales of mooncakes amid keen market competition in the past two years.

Before concluding his visit, Mr Ma met the Chairman of Kwai Tsing District Council, Mr Tang Kwok-kong, and other District Councillors to listen to their views on the district's development.
