Outbreak of influenza-like illness in primary school
****************************************************

    The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is investigating an outbreak of influenza-like illness affecting 20 students of a primary school in Ma On Shan.

    A CHP spokesman said the affected children, comprising nine boys and 11 girls, aged from six to eight, developed an influenza-like illness, including fever, cough and sore throat, since February 24.

    Fifteen of them consulted private doctors or out-patient clinics. All of them are in stable condition and none of them required hospitalisation.

    CHP officials have conducted field visits to the school and provided health instructions to the staff.

    The CHP called on members of the public and management of institutions to take preventive measures against the disease by observing strict environmental and personal hygiene.

    To prevent influenza and respiratory tract infection, the public is advised to adopt the following measures:

* Build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking;
* Maintain good personal hygiene, and wash hands after sneezing, coughing and wear a mask when developing symptoms of respiratory infections;
* Maintain good ventilation; and
* Avoid visiting crowded places with poor ventilation, especially during peak influenza season.

    Members of the public, particularly children, elderly people and those with chronic diseases, should wear face masks and consult their doctors for medical advice promptly if they develop symptoms of respiratory tract infection.

    For more information on the disease, members of the public may visit the CHP's website (www.chp.gov.hk).
