AFCD reminds people not to give away animals as gifts
*****************************************************

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) today (December 22) reminded the general public not to impulsively give away animals as gifts in order to prevent animal abandonment in the future.

"Anyone who is considering purchasing animals as gifts must be certain that the recipient is able to provide proper care. When someone decides to keep a pet, they should treat it as a pet for life and not a disposable commodity," a spokesman said.

"One must respect the life of animal. A pet is a life-long commitment and animal abandoning is an irresponsible act."

The AFCD will continue to promote the message of responsible pet ownership and animal welfare through various channels.
