New Kwai Tsing landmark to greet 2008 Olympics (with photos)
************************************************************

A new landmark in Kwai Tsing to greet the 2008 Beijing Olympics under the "Kwai Tsing District Revitalisation Project" was unveiled at a ceremony today (December 20).

The landmark features a clock tower and six sail screens. While the tower features Tsing Yi's logistics and warehousing development, the sail screens signify the district transforming from a fishing village into a modern town.

With the energetic looks of Hong Kong sportspeople portrayed on the sail screens, the new landmark will boost the 2008 Olympic atmosphere in the district.

"In the bustling heart of Kwai Tsing, this distinctive landmark and the adjacent new green area will help bring a relaxing glow to both commuters and tourists," the Director of Home Affairs, Mrs Pamela Tan, said today.

With the aim of revitalising and bringing green life through the project, 60 representatives from the community and relevant government departments participated in workshop discussions co-ordinated by the Kwai Tsing District Office.

The project was jointly carried out by the Home Affairs Department and the Hong Kong Housing Society and is the first of its kind in the New Territories.

Construction started in February this year and cost about $7.9 million. With its completion, it will be an ideal venue for large-scale district events.

"The Home Affairs Department will continue to work with the Housing Society and District Councils to promote these revitalising programmes in the community," Mrs Tan said.

Other officiating guests at today's unveiling ceremony were Chairman of the Hong Kong Housing Society Mr Yeung Ka-sing, and Chairman of the Kwai Tsing District Council Mr Chow Yick-hay.
