Over 2 000 off-duty officers of the Correctional Services Department (CSD) and their family took part in the family day on Hei Ling Chau (HLC) today (December 16).
"Family outing on Hei Ling" had a long history and had been an annual gathering for CSD's officers and their family, said CSD's Assistant Commissioner (Human Resource), Mr Yung Kwok-leung.
Mr Yung said, "There are a number of tailor-made activities for staff and their family members. The proximity of the venue to three penal institutions also allows our staff to introduce our work to family members and hence enhance their understanding of CSD's work and working environment, even though the penal institutions are not available for visits.
"The family day also features a number of physical activities including long distance run which give ample opportunities for staff members to display their physical strength, and add to their friendship with fellow officers."
"Hei Ling Chau is such a scenic island that we place great emphasis on environmental preservation. Apart from activities emphasising on mental and physical health, there are pastoral activities and workshops on environmental preservation to promote green messages," Mr Yung added.
CSD's environmental effort on HLC covers, among others, backyard composting - the use of containers to transform organic materials into fertiliser for plants; recycling; waste reduction; sewage treatment system, etc. In 2002, CSD's Environmental Management System (EMS) for HLC was awarded an ISO 14001:1996 certificate for its operations on the island which met the EMS accreditation standard.
Programmes of today's family gathering included long distance race, fishing competition, hiking and environmental preservation workshop.
