Proprietor fined $24,000 for violation of safety rules

    Rise Spread Engineering Limited was fined $24,000 at Eastern Magistrates' Court today (December 11) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance.  The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident on July 17, 2006, at a North Point construction site when a worker fell to the ground from the 8th floor. Immediately before the accident, he was using a material hoist to move two sunshade panels.

     According to Section 6A(2)(a) of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance, a proprietor shall provide a system of work that is safe and without risk to the health of the worker.  Failure to do so could mean a fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for six months.              

     Section 6A(2)(c) of the ordinance states that a proprietor shall provide information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to ensure the health and safety of the worker.  Any proprietor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $500,000 and to imprisonment for six months.
