Rising local pianist Shum Kin-wai, the third runner-up in the 11th Schubert International Piano Competition held in Dortmund, Germany, in September, will give a recital next month (January).
The recital will take place at 8pm on Thursday, January 10, 2008, at the Theatre, Hong Kong City Hall. It will feature an all-Schubert programme, including "Six German Dances", "Der Muller und der Bach" (Trans Liszt), "Wohin?" (Trans Liszt), "Wanderer Fantasy", "Piano Piece in C" and "Sonata in C Minor".
Shum Kin-wai is the first Chinese prize-winner of the Schubert International Piano Competition. He has also shone in other international competitions, including the Hilton Head International Piano Competition in the United States (1999), the G. B. Viotti International Music Competition (2001), the Casalgrande International Piano Competition (2002) in Italy and the Maria Canals International Music Competition (2004) in Spain.
Shum received his early musical training at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Later he travelled to the United States to study at the Eastman School of Music and graduated with a masters degree in music and a specially awarded performer's certificate.
He has performed at the Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City (Utah, the United States), the Dortmund Concert House (Germany), the Hamamatsu Concert Hall (Japan), and the historic Marble Hall of Schloss Mirabell in Salzburg (Austria). As a collaborative pianist, he has appeared in the Sarasota Music Festival (Florida, the United States) and in the Casalmaggiore Music Festival (Italy). In Hong Kong, he has given numerous solo and duo recitals.
Shum is also an enthusiastic instructor at the piano faculty of the Hong Kong Baptist University and guest instructor at the Hong Kong Institute of Education and the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
"Piano Recital by Shum Kin-wai" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD).
Tickets priced at $90 and $130 are now available at URBTIX outlets.
