STH visits Southern District (with photos)
******************************************

The Secretary for Transport and Housing, Ms Eva Cheng, today (December 6) visited Southern District to see the latest transport infrastructure and public housing developments.

Accompanied by Southern District Officer, Ms Eva Yam, Ms Cheng visited sites earmarked in the district for the proposed MTR South Island Line.

She then visited the site of former Wong Chuk Hang Estate which is scheduled to be demolished later this month.  The site was recovered by the Housing Department in September under the Comprehensive Redevelopment Programme.  A total of 4,500 households were rehoused, with nearly 80% of them moved to the newly completed Shek Pai Wan Estate.

Ms Cheng also took the opportunity to visit the Shek Pai Wan Integrated Work Centre housed in the estate and run by the New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association.  She chatted with the students of the centre and tasted pastries and bread baked by them.

The centre was one of the four welfare organisations relocated from Wong Chuk Hang Estate to Shek Pai Wan Estate.

To conclude the trip, Ms Cheng paid a visit to an elderly singleton and was pleased to see that he had settled in well after moving from Wong Chuk Hang Estate to the present unit.

"Shek Pai Wan Estate is a good example of a successful rehousing exercise, preserving the local network of residents and promoting a culture of mutual support and care," said Ms Cheng.
