Prince of Wales Hospital press release on cases of respiratory tract infection

    Regarding a paediatric surgical ward of Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH) in which there were several patients presented with symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections earlier, the hospital announced the following updates today (March 2):

     One more baby boy (aged 16 months) of the same ward presented with the symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections.  Since February 20, a total of eight babies (5 male and 3 female, aged 1 month to 16 months) of the ward presented with symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections.  All of them were tested positive for Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).  They are being treated under isolation and clinically stable.  The hospital will closely monitor their condition.  The hospital has informed patients' families and relatives.

     All other patients in the ward concerned are under close surveillance.  Infection control measures have already been enhanced.  Thorough cleansing and disinfection have been carried out.  Visiting to the ward is allowed on exceptional condition providing that visitors observe strictly all infection control measures.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority and Centre for Health Protection for follow up.
