DFEH's visit on import of Mainland freshwater fish
**************************************************

The Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene, Mr Eddy Chan, today (March 2) visited the Guangdong Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau (GDCIQ) and met the bureau's Deputy Director, Mr Huang Weiming, to discuss regulating import of Mainland freshwater fish.

Both sides expressed concern over the import of freshwater fish into Hong Kong from improper channels. Both sides agreed to step up monitoring measures on fish loads transported to Hong Kong by sea to ensure that the fish met food safety standards.

Mr Chan said the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department's Centre for Food Safety (CFS) and the Customs and Excise Department would closely monitor the situation and continue to combat freshwater fish coming from improper channels.

Members of the Hong Kong delegation included the Deputy Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Mr Cheuk Wing-hing; Assistant Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Mr Johnson Tang; CFS Controller, Dr Mak Sin-ping; and CFS Assistant Director (Food Surveillance and Control), Dr Constance Chan.
