************************************************************

Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra will give a concert, "A Showcase of Chinese Orchestral Music: Xia Feiyun & Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra", under the batons of renowned Chinese conductor Xia Feiyun and its own conductors Cheng Yuk and Chan Chiu-yin.

Featuring "Song of the General"; "Snow Lotus"; "The Sun"; "Nocturne"; "A Beautiful Night"; "King Chu Doffs His Armour"; "Scenes of Tianshan"; "For the Love of the Yellow Earth" and "Spring", the concert will be at 8pm, Sunday, March 25, at the Auditorium, Tsuen Wan Town Hall.

As the first professionally trained conductor of Chinese orchestral music, Xia Feiyun graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and has been teaching there. Being the first conductor introducing the Chinese-Western hybrid format into Peking Opera accompaniment, Xia conducted more than 100 performances of the modern Peking Operas, "Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy" and "The Harbour" since 1969.

Xia was the guest conductor of the Chinese National Orchestra, Shanghai National Music Orchestra and the Singapore Chinese Orchestra. With his flair, accuracy and precision, he won a "Special Conducting Award" at the 3rd Gold Disc Awards in China (1995), and was acclaimed as "an outstanding conductor".

Founded in 1962, the Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra is one of the oldest Chinese orchestras in Hong Kong. The orchestra has organised regular performances to introduce different styles of Chinese folk music to the public and to provide training and performing opportunities to local young musicians. In recent years, the orchestra has collaborated with an array of music virtuosos and performances have received great acclaim from audiences and critics alike.

"A Showcase of Chinese Orchestral Music: Xia Feiyun & Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra in Concert" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
