Norovirus outbreak at Tuen Mun Hospital

    Regarding a geriatric ward in Tuen Mun Hospital in which patients and staff has earlier presented with vomiting and diarrhoea symptoms, the hospital announced the following update today (January 29):

     Two more male patients (aged 72 and 81) presented with vomiting and diarrhoea symptoms.  The patients were being treated under isolation and they are in stable condition.  Since January 19, six patients and four staff members have presented with vomiting or diarrhoea symptoms. The symptoms of the four staff members have subsided and they have resumed duty.  Test results of two patients and two staff members were positive for Norovirus and results for other patients are pending.

     Admission to the ward has been suspended. Restricted visiting to and discharge from the ward are also imposed.  Patients¡¯ relatives have been informed about the situation.  Infection control measures of the ward concerned have already been stepped up.  All other patients and the staff in the ward are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.
