Established in the city for 30 years, the Hong Kong China Philharmonic Orchestra will give a concert at the Auditorium, Tsuen Wan Town Hall, at 8pm on Sunday, January 28.
Under the batons of its artistic director Lim Kek-han and guest conductor Vincent Liauw, the orchestra will play Boieldieu's Overture to "La calife de Bagdad"; Liu Tieshan and Mao Yuan's "Dance of the Yao People"; Schubert's "Symphony No. 8 in B Minor, Unfinished" and Tchaikovsky's "Capriccio Italien". Lim will also be the violin soloist for Bruch's "Violin Concerto No.1 in G Minor".
An Indonesia-born Chinese, Lim began studying violin under renowned Russian teacher Ywan Federoff and Dutch teacher Frits Hinse at the age of six. After graduating with distinction from the Royal Academy of Music in Amsterdam in 1951, he represented Holland three times in international music forums and became concert master of the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra. He later furthered his studies in conducting at the Paris Conservatoire and the National Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. In 1958, he went to the then USSR as a representative of China and performed with the best-known orchestras there. In 1963, Lim was made the conductor and music director of the Central Radio Symphony Orchestra. He moved to Hong Kong in 1971 and has been well-known as one of the local conductors and violinists.
Hong Kong China Philharmonic Orchestra originated from the Lim Kek Han Philharmonic Orchestra founded in 1977, with Lim as music director and principal conductor. The orchestra holds a number of concerts every year, bringing different kinds of music to its audiences. Soloists and guest conductors are also invited from the Mainland and overseas to perform with the orchestra.
Concert by the Hong Kong China Philharmonic Orchestra is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets priced at $120, $90 and $60 are now available at URBTIX outlets, while senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients may have 50% off (limited quotas for student and CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis). A 10% discount applies to Friends of LCSD performing venues.
