Press release on PYNEH diarrhoea cases update

    Regarding the female psycho-geriatric ward in Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH) in which there are five patients with diarrhoea symptom earlier, PYNEH made the following announcement today (30 December 2006):

     Today, three staff members in the concerned ward were found to have symptoms of diarrhoea and/or vomiting. The staff members are now on sick leave and are in stable condition.  Of the five patients presented with symptoms of diarrhea and/or vomiting which have been reported earlier, one patient was found positive to Norovirus and two patients found negative. Laboratory investigation and results for the remaining patients were pending. All patients are being treated in isolation and all are in stable condition.

     PYNEH has stepped up infection control measures in the ward and will continue to monitor the situation. Admission and visiting to the ward are both suspended.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority and Centre for Health Protection.
