Customs seizes counterfeit medicine (with photo)

    Hong Kong Customs officers yesterday (December 14) raided a dispensary in Mong Kok, seizing 3,000 tablets of suspected counterfeit medicine for arthritis.

     Following a complaint lodged by a trademark owner, Customs commenced an investigation and raided the alleged location at 5.40pm. The seized medicine was worth about $4,080.

     Customs officers arrested a 23-year-old man, who was released on bail pending further investigation.

     Members of the public are encouraged to call the Customs and Excise Department on its 24-hour hotline, 2545 6182, if they come across any suspected counterfeiting activities.

     Anyone who contravenes the Trade Descriptions Ordinance is liable to prosecution. The maximum penalty is a fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for five years.
