Young violinist Wilson Cheng, who played at Windsor Castle for Queen Elizabeth's 80th birthday in April, will play for Hong Kong audiences next month (August).
Cheng will collaborate with his renowned teacher, Lim Kek-han, and the China Philharmonic Orchestra of Hong Kong in the concert.
The programme includes Tchaikovsky's "Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture" and "Violin Concerto in D, Op. 35", Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 in E-flat, Op. 55, "Eroica" and Offenbach's Overture "Orpheus in the Underworld".
Cheng graduated from St. Paul's Co-educational College, Hong Kong, in 2004. He started learning the violin under Lim Kek-han when he was six and achieved Grade Eight four years later. During that time, he participated in many outdoor concerts organised by the China Philharmonic Orchestra and at the age of 11 he appeared with the orchestra as a soloist in the 1998 Educational Concert for the Young Talent, performing Vittorio Monti's Csardas and Bach's Violin Concerto No.1 in A Minor. Cheng was the principal violin in many concerts.
When he was studying in the UK, he was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Schools of Music (FRSM) in violin performance. During his stay in the UK, he won the Final of the National Chamber Competition and has participated actively in different master classes, for example, the Copenhagen Trio. He has played with a number of orchestras and in various concerts, including the National Youth Music Theatre Royal Gala, and has performed at Piccadilly Theatre and, as a soloist, at St John's, Smith Square in London.
The China Philharmonic Orchestra of Hong Kong, founded by Lim Kek-han in 1977, holds several concerts every year and brings different kinds of music to audiences. Lim is also the music director and principal conductor of the orchestra. Famous soloists and guest conductors are also invited from the Mainland and overseas to perform with the orchestra, which is dedicated to introducing to Hong Kong audiences Chinese music rearranged in a modern style.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the concert will be staged at 8pm, August 5 (Saturday) at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall.
Tickets priced at $140, $100 and $70 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions will be granted to senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients (limited tickets for students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis). A 10% discount is offered to Friends of LCSD performing venues.
