A household in Hong Kong spent on average $18,900 per month on consumption items in 2004/05. Housing and food together accounted for more than half of the total household expenditure. The other categories with relatively significant proportions were miscellaneous services and transport.
The above are some of the findings of the 2004/05 Household Expenditure Survey (HES) given in the report entitled "2004/05 Household Expenditure Survey and the Rebasing of the Consumer Price Indices" published by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD). This publication presents detailed analyses of the latest expenditure patterns of households. The methodology of the HES is also presented.
Based on the survey results, the expenditure shares used in compiling the Consumer Price Indices (CPIs) have been updated. The main features of the new 2004/05-based CPI series are also given in the publication.
