The Hong Kong Repertory Theatre made its US debut performance of "Love in a Fallen City" to a packed audience at the Gerald W. Lynch Theatre of John Jay College in New York tonight (May 5, New York time).

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, New York is the Presenting Sponsor of the  event to benefit the Chinese Community Partnership for Health of the New York Downtown Hospital.

Speaking at the opening of the two performances, the Hong Kong Commissioner for Economic and Trade Affairs in the US, Miss Jacqueline Willis, said it had been 17 years since the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre was last in New York.  "I am sure you will agree that tonight is well worth the wait.  Artistic Director, Fredric Mao, has brought us a formidable cast from Hong Kong to perform this highly acclaimed play," Miss Willis said.

"In the lead is one of Hong Kong's best known and respected actors, Tony Leung Ka Fai, who has won many awards for his acting in films and on the stage.  The two leading ladies, Louisa So and Alice Lau, are accomplished actors well known for their work in the theatre.  They are all an important part of Hong Kong's thriving and vibrant arts and cultural scene.

"As 'Asia's world city', Hong Kong has a flourishing performing arts community that continuously showcases an eclectic mix of art, history and heritage from both the East and the West.   This is best exemplified in the work of Fredric Mao, Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre."

Based on the famous novel of the same name by legendary contemporary writer Eileen Chang, the stage production of "Love in a Fallen City" enjoyed great success in Hong Kong and Shanghai. The Hong Kong Repertory Theatre is in New York after its performances in Toronto and will be in Beijing in mid-May to perform at the "Meet in Beijing Arts Festival".
