Appointments to HKCPEC for new term

    The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today (March 31) announced the appointments to the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Co-operation (HKCPEC) for two years, effective from tomorrow (April 1, 2006).

     President of Lingnan University Professor Edward Chen has been reappointed as the chairman of the HKCPEC which will have eight academics, four businessmen and two government members for the new term.

    Established in March, 1990, the HKCPEC comprises business leaders, academics and government officials, who advise the Government on matters related to Hong Kong's participation in the Pacific Economic Co-operation Council (PECC). Hong Kong has become a member of PECC since May, 1991.

     PECC, tripartite in nature, serves as an independent forum for discussing trade and economic issues, and fostering closer economic co-operation in the Pacific region.

     PECC has 23 full members - Australia; Brunei Darussalam; Canada; Chile; China; Colombia; Ecuador; Hong Kong, China; Indonesia; Japan; Korea; Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; Peru; the Philippines; Russia; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; the United States; Vietnam and the Pacific Islands Forum. There are also two associate members: France (Pacific Territories) and Mongolia. In addition, PECC has two institutional members, which are the Pacific Trade and Development Conference (PAFTAD) and Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC).

     "We are very pleased that Professor Chen will continue to chair the HKCPEC.  During his tenure as the HKCPEC Chairman in the past four years, he has demonstrated his enthusiasm in leading the committee's participation in PECC activities. We are confident that, under his leadership, the HKCPEC will continue to contribute constructively to economic co-operation in the region," a government spokesman said.
