Local orchestra to perform in a "Funtastic" Chinese music journey

    The Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra will embark on a "funtastic" April journey in two concerts with young musicians under the batons of conductors Chen Ning-chi and Wai Sing-fat.

     The concert, "Funtastic China", is a music journey to enhance the audience's knowledge of Chinese geography with a number of Chinese works, including the premiere of "Facets of China" (with multimedia presentation and voice-over); "Sentiments of Hong Kong"; "The Great Wall Capriccio"; zheng solo "On the Banks of Ili River" and erhu duet "The Wusuli Melody ¡ª Hunting", to name a few.

     "Funtastic China" will be held at 3pm on Sunday, April 9, at the Theatre, Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre, and Sunday, April 23, at the Auditorium, Tai Po Civic Centre.

     The Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra was established in 1979 to promote Chinese music and carry forward its rich heritage. Its members are professionally trained recitalists and winners of the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. Some of them were selected by the Music Office as join "Hong Kong Elite", which gives touring performances abroad.

     In 1999, the orchestra presented a highly successful 20th anniversary concert entitled "The Way We Were", bringing to Hong Kong the Keat Hong Chinese Orchestra from Singapore, the Professional Cultural Center Orchestra from Malaysia and the Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra from Australia.

     The orchestra has cut many recordings including "Song of the Chariots", "Gongs and Drums in Celebration of a Bumper Harvest" and the gold-disc winner, "Fishermen's Song of the East Sea". The orchestra has also toured Singapore, the United States, Australia and a number of Mainland cities.

     "Funtastic China" is one of the entertaining programmes in "Family Fiesta" series presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Other attractions of the series include "A Super Fun Concert" by the Moscow State Puppets Theatre named after Sergei Obraztsov (Russia), "Goodies, Beasties and Sweethearts" by Thˆm?tre des Confettis (Canada); "Modern Journey to the West" by Chung Ying Theatre Company; "Parent-child Workshop on A cappella" by Gay Singers; "Papa Ali Baba" by Theatre Ensemble; "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" by Theatre Hikosen (Japan); Concert by Hong Kong Children's Symphony Orchestra and "Little Swan Lake" by Ming Ri Institute for Arts Education and Guangxi Puppet Art Troupe.      Tickets priced at $70 are now available at URBTIX outlets, while senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients may have 50% off (limited quotas for CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis). A 10% discount applies to Friends of LCSD performing venues. There will be a maximum of 20% off for a single purchase of different programmes in the series.
