Expo provides careers and educational information
*************************************************

Young people and job-seekers can obtain information on careers, education and training opportunities at the Education and Careers Expo 2006 organised by the Labour Department and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

With "Explore the World of Opportunities" as its theme, the expo will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Wan Chai, from February 23 to 26. Admission is free.

A total of 489 exhibitors including government departments, public bodies, professional associations, vocational training bodies and private enterprises will take part in the expo this year. They will provide career information such as entry requirements, job prospects and promotion opportunities in various trades and industries as well as local and overseas educational opportunities.

"With a revival of the economy, there is a greater demand for manpower. On the other hand, employers also raise their expectations of the quality of job-seekers," Senior Labour Officer (Careers & Employment Agencies) of the Labour Department, Mrs Louisa Poon, said today (February 19).

"In view of the keen competition in the job market, job-seekers and fresh graduates are encouraged to visit the expo to gather the latest information on career prospects and educational opportunities. They are welcome to 'explore the world of opportunities'.

"Many young people have encountered difficulties in securing jobs due to their lack of work experience. Therefore, a special counter and a seminar on the Youth Pre-employment Training Programme and the Youth Work Experience and Training Scheme will be arranged by the Labour Department at the expo. Youngsters are encouraged to enrol on the spot in one of the schemes to receive pre-employment training or to gain work attachment experience. This will help enhance their employability," she said.

"A series of careers seminars will also be organised and some experienced practitioners from various professions will talk about the latest developments in their trades and share their experiences." Topics include "A Career in Journalism", "Be a Retail Talent ¡ª Become a Real Professional in Business Management" and "Career Opportunity in Banking and Financial Industry".

Visitors can also obtain information on the Labour Department's diversified employment services. They can try the user-friendly Vacancy Searching Terminals, or browse through our Interactive Employment Service on the Internet and Careers Information website for the latest vacancies and careers information.
