HK Central Library exhibition shares memories of Art-Tune records (with photos)
*******************************************************************************
The exhibition "The Art-Tune Encounter: A Gramophone Remembrance of Hong Kong and Shanghai", organised by the Hong Kong Public Libraries of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, is being held from today (August 30) to November 30 at the Arts Resource Centre of the Hong Kong Central Library (HKCL). The exhibition reminisces on the collective music memory of the China Record Corporation in Shanghai and the Art-Tune Records Company in Hong Kong over 50 years.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition was held today, with the Assistant Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Libraries and Development), Miss Rochelle Lau, and the Managing Director of China Record (Shanghai) Company Limited, Mr Zhang Limin, as officiating guests.

The Art-Tune Records Company was established in Hong Kong in 1956. Its business was to remaster  and reproduce  the recordings of the China Record Corporation in Shanghai for sale in Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asia and other overseas markets with the brand name Art-Tune, bringing brand new Chinese music to music lovers. The origin of Art-Tune Records can be traced back to a "top secret" letter issued by the Central Broadcasting Agency, aiming to build up its corporate image to promote the arts and culture development of the new China.

The exhibition showcases old records of Art-Tune stored at the HKCL and valuable historical documents such as record contracts and letters from the archive of the China Record Corporation, detailing the relationship between the two recording companies over the decades.

To complement the exhibition, two talks will be held at the Lecture Theatre of the HKCL. The first one, entitled "The Art-Tune: An Uncommon History in the China Record Industry", will be held at 2.30pm today in Putonghua. Speakers will include Associate Researcher of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music Mr Han Bin and local music expert Professor Yu Siu-wah. Another talk entitled "The Art-Tune Phenomenon: Early Martial Film Music in Hong Kong" will be held at 6.30pm on September 20. It will be hosted by the Chief Librarian (Hong Kong Central Library and Extension Activities), Dr Jim Chang, in Cantonese.

The exhibition is one of the events celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Admission to the exhibition and talks is free.
